Living in Darwin is all about enjoying the great outdoors with your furry friends, from beach days to bush walks, there’s so much to explore! But with our tropical climate, there are a few things to keep in mind to ensure your pet stays happy and healthy. Here’s a quick guide to help you and your pet make the most of life in the Top End.
Vaccinations
Leptospirosis australis, a disease spread by rats and wildlife through contaminated water, this strain is not found in many other Australian places so if you are new to the Top End, we recommend to vaccinate your dog for this (it takes two doses, then a booster every year).
Unfortunately, we also see more cases of Parvovirus (parvo) here, which is why we recommend the C5 vaccination every year. This vaccine covers parvo, canine distemper, hepatitis and two strains of kennel cough.
Cats in Darwin also need regular vaccinations. We recommend annual F3 vaccinations (for Feline herpesvirus, panleukopenia and calicivirus) as well as the FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus).
Parasites: How to Stay Ahead of Them
In our tropical climate, parasites like worms, fleas, and ticks love the warm weather, so it’s extra important to stay on top of treatments for both dogs and cats. Pets should be wormed regularly - we recommend monthly.
Puppies and kittens need more frequent doses (every 2 weeks until they’re 16 weeks old). This helps keep your pets and your family safe, as some of these parasites can be transmitted to humans too!
Heartworm is also something to watch out for, as it’s spread by mosquitoes and unfortunately, there are plenty here!
You can choose between monthly tablets or an annual heartworm injection, whichever works best for you and your pet. Both are effective and easy to stay on top of.
Ehrlichiosis, is a tick-borne disease that has been confirmed in dogs around Darwin over the last few years. It is spread by the Brown Dog Tick, which is commonly found in Darwin, so keeping up with tick prevention is vital - it’s easy to protect your pet with a chewable tablet and tick collar.
Spirometra tapeworm is also prevalent in the Top End, and not very common elsewhere in Australia. Although most worming products cover for hydatid tapeworm, the dose is not high enough for spirometra, so we recommend an extra tablet to be given every three months.
Pet-Friendly Adventures Around Darwin
It’s not all disease and gloom though! When it comes to getting out and about with your dog, Darwin has plenty to offer. Whether you enjoy strolling through the Botanic Gardens, walking along the Foreshore, checking out the Jingili Water Gardens, heading to the beach, or visiting one of the many dog-friendly cafes; your dog will love all the fresh air and space to roam.
Darwin also has three off-lead dog parks where your furry friends can run around; located in Muirhead, Lakeside Drive and Marlow’s Lagoon. Just don’t forget to stay crocwise near any body of water and keep an eye on the temperatures - Darwin can get very warm, especially in the middle of the day; increasing the risk of heat stress for both you and your pet. Make sure you have access to drinking water, shade and head into the aircon when it gets too hot!
Darwin is a wonderful place for pets, with so many beautiful outdoor spaces to explore and lots of opportunities for fun. The key is to stay on top of vaccinations, parasite prevention, and tick control to keep your pet healthy while enjoying all that the Top End has to offer.
