Fishing in the Top End with Kids: Our Happy Place

Hi, I’m Yoshi — a proud member of the Top Ender community, and today I want to share a little slice of our life, and why fishing in the Northern Territory is our ultimate escape from the everyday chaos.
We fish for all sorts of species, but my heart belongs to Barramundi. There’s nothing quite like the thrill of casting out, feeling that tug on the line, and watching a ‘barra’ leap from the water. The kids scream with excitement, Ben grabs the net, and together we land the catch — it’s a team effort every time, and that’s what makes it so special.
My kids always out-fish me (unfair, right?), but I love teaching them how to stay safe in NT waters while passing on essential life skills. They’ve learned to respect the environment — like knowing where it’s safe to swim in WA versus keeping limbs inside the boat at Shady Camp. Their awareness of crocodiles and their respect for nature makes me proud. It’s not about fear; it’s about appreciation for the incredible wildlife we share this land with.
Growing up, I was always encouraged to explore and get hands-on with nature, and that’s something my husband and I were determined to continue with our own children. Fishing is in our blood — passed down from parents and grandparents — and now it’s our way of bonding, learning, and making memories.
Of course, it’s not always smooth sailing. There are tears, arguments, play fights, and snack dramas (either no one eats, or they eat everything, and I wish I’d packed more!). But we survive — and we laugh about it later.
My favourite fishing spot? The legendary Daly River, known for its Barramundi. Earlier this year, I had the incredible opportunity to join the GGF25 team (Girls Gone Fishing) with Reeling Veterans — and if you ever get the chance, SIGN UP! It was hands-down one of the most empowering and fun experiences I’ve ever had. The vibe was all about supporting women in amateur fishing, and I loved every minute of it (even if my husband still does most of the work — I just catch the fish!).
Other great Darwin spots include Shady Camp, Kakadu, and Darwin Harbour — perfect for reef fish or chasing a mackerel bust-up.
So, here’s my advice: if you’re in the Northern Territory, get out there. Explore. Take that random trip even if it feels like a stretch. Live fully, make memories, and embrace the wild beauty of this place - it’s worth it.
