MakerSpace is an Army innovation initiative designed to strengthen the cognitive capability of Defence personnel through creativity, hands-on learning, and nontraditional problem solving. Delivered on base and free to attend for all members, MakerSpace empowers members to think differently, prototype rapidly, and develop practical solutions to real operational challenges.
Located across nine sites nationally, MakerSpace provides a safe, welcoming, and member focused environment where people are encouraged to explore ideas, experiment, fail fast and learn quickly. Equipped with modern creation tools such as 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC routers, electronics benches, and CAD software, MakerSpace enables Defence personnel to turn ideas into tangible prototypes.
A core element of MakerSpace is formal education and exposure to emerging technologies. Through programs such as the Army Applied Innovation Course, Lean Innovation for Leaders, and targeted workshops, participants are introduced to design thinking, agile methodologies, and creative leadership. MakerSpace also provides hands-on access to new and emerging technologies, helping personnel understand what is possible and how technology can be applied to improve capability, efficiency and effectiveness in operational environments. This approach supports bottom-up innovation and the development of a future-ready workforce.
MakerSpace engages broadly across Defence, working with units, training establishments and support organisations, such as Soldier Recovery Centres. It supports personnel during rehabilitation and periods of transition by providing meaningful skill development in an adult learning environment. Transitioning veterans also benefit through exposure to skills and technologies relevant to innovative civilian industries.
In 2025, MakerSpace supported Army’s Rise of the Drones competition, immersing participants in First Person View drone construction and flight. Across 18 races, members built and flew sub250g drones, developing skills in flight control, precision and spatial awareness through simulation, timed trials and obstacle courses.
