It Feels Like Home - Travel Blog

Hello from our family to yours!

We are a little RAAF family living in the beautiful Katherine and Tindal area in the Northern Territory.

During our first stint here in the NT, we fell in love with this enduring place…. and each other. Meeting as a young, single school teacher and young avionics technician we spent most weekends fishing and camping and even bought a boat together.  Camping under the endless starry sky at the beautiful Douglas Hot Springs. Sleeping on the boat in Blackfellas Creek off the winding Roper river, listening to Barramundi boof the waters surface all around us in the moonlight.  In the wet season, when the Katherine river reaches a certain height, exploring the Katherine Gorge in a speedboat was an incredible experience with waterfalls everywhere.

After five years away, we were yearning to get back to the Top End and introduce its beauty to our two little boys (aged three and five).

As a family, we love to get out camping, fishing, exploring and adventuring as much as we can.  From a quick overnight trip to the stunning Nitmiluk National Park or a week away, down the rough and dusty Roper Highway, past Tomato Island camping and fishing at the almost untouched Port Roper.  The boys caught their first barramundi here and love having a bubble bath in a plastic tub and sleeping in their tent.

Sometimes we enjoy a night or two at Timber Creek with its stunning escarpments, a swim at Edith Falls or Mataranka’s Bitter Springs, followed by a yummy lunch at the Mataranka Homestead.  Kakadu, Litchfield, Bynoe Harbour or a bigger trip to the Kimberley or down towards the centre!  There is so much to see, do and love about the Top End.

The local people from Katherine and Tindal we have met along the way have become a second family and this remote little town now feels like home... a home we have come back to.

Perhaps we will see you here one day!

Happy adventures,

Love Chris, Chloe, Archie and Billy.
