Cam Waters, born in Mildura, Victoria, is a top-tier Australian racing driver competing in the Supercars Championship with Tickford Racing, driving the No. 6 Monster Energy Ford Mustang.
Cam kicked off his racing career in go-karts, collecting multiple national and state championships before graduating to Formula Vee in 2009. He moved into the Australian Formula Ford Championship in 2010, finishing sixth as the top rookie before taking the outright title in his sophomore campaign.
Cam was thrust into the national spotlight in 2011 when he scored the chance to tackle the Mountain at Bathurst! In 2020, Waters stamped himself as the new face of Tickford as he finished runner-up to champion Scott McLaughlin, with many more wins, podiums and awards to add to his list of achievements over the last few years!
A former Super2 Series champion, Waters has been a consistent contender in the main game, with multiple Bathurst podiums and championship runner-up finishes. Cam also races sprint cars and made his NASCAR debut in 2024.
We had the pleasure of changing gears with Cam between racing in New Zealand and heading to Darwin for the Triple Crown series!
HOW OLD WERE YOU AT VARIOUS STAGES OF YOUR RACING CAREER?
I started my racing career in go-karting when I was 7 years old, then moved into circuit racing, driving in Formula Vee when I was 14 and then Formula Ford when I was 15. I’ve raced extensively in Speedway, winning two National Titles, and have been in Supercars as a professional driver since 2016, with the same team and sponsor for the last 11 years. I raced my first Bathurst as a 17-year-old.
WHO HAS SUPPORTED YOU THE MOST THROUGHOUT YOUR RACING CAREER?
My parents and older brother were huge supporters from a very early age and ensured I had a balanced approach to racing, and put in the work to succeed, both on the track and at school.
WHY ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT RACING?
The adrenaline and thrill of competing for victory. There is no better feeling than mastering all of the dynamics and challenges of the car, track and weather conditions, and standing on the top step of the podium, regardless of the class you are racing in.
WHO IS YOUR MENTOR?
I always admired Marcos Ambrose, who won two Supercars Championships before making a successful transition into NASCAR in the USA.
HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR A RACE WEEKEND OR THE MORNING OF A BIG RACE?
I maintain a routine of eating well with healthy and high protein foods, keeping my fluids and trying to relax to music while also visualising the tactics I plan to use at the start. I also spend a lot of time with my engineer talking through strategies for the race.
WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST CAREER ACHIEVEMENT?
My greatest career achievements are winning the 2011 Australian Formula Ford Championship, the 2015 Dunlop Supercars Championship and scoring my first Supercars race win at Sandown in 2017. It was also great to be voted Supercars Driver’s Driver by my peers in 2021.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN 3 WORDS?
Driven, motivated and a perfectionist.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE THING TO DO IN THE TOP END?
I have always enjoyed visiting Darwin and the extended region across the Top End. I have a passion for deep sea blue water fishing and helicopter tours over Kakadu.
The Top Ender Tri-Services team is sincerely grateful to Cam Waters for his time with us between a busy racing schedule and career commitments - we wish Cam every success with his future racing!
